News for the Week of January 7th

Happy New Year!  We have settled into the second half of our first grade year quite well this week.  Our reading groups are focusing more and more on strategies to help with our comprehension of stories.  Ask your child who and what as they are reading to you.  Have them wonder with you about things that might happen in the story and always have them retell the story to you with as many details as possible when they are done reading.

In writing we reviewed capitals, end marks, finger spaces , neat handwriting and making sure our story makes sense.  These skills help us write for our readers so our readers can read our writing.

In math we worked on addition and subtraction facts and number stories.  We are also identifying what place (ones and tens) numbers are in.

We have begun our unit on American History and learned about the Lost Colony and Jamestown.  See if your child can tell you what he or she thinks happened to the Lost Colony.

Finally we are beginning our Leader in Me Curriculum that teaches us more about the Seven Habits.  We learned about paradigms (how we see the world) and principles (things that are always there even though we can’t see them like honesty).  As we cover each of the habits, I will send home a parent letter that explains them.
