Last Week of School

Please send your child with a backpack or bag every day this week as things will be coming home.

Tuesday: A fairly normal day...We will be working on our memory books and enjoying some quiet reading time and time playing math games. The students will have lunch in the cafeteria. In the morning right after school starts we will line up in the hall outside our room to high five the 8th graders who will be graduating.

Wednesday: This will be a fairly normal day, too with some reading and math and writing letters to second grade teachers and thank you letters to our guides at Barr Lake. We will also cleaning out our cubbies. Lunch will be in the room. Ethan's mom (Sharon Chagolla) is purchasing pizza and drinks for the class. Please send your children with any additional snacks that they may want. Thank you again to Sharon. This will be a lot of fun! Also look for Friday folders to come home on Wednesday with some summer packets to reinforce all that we have learned this year. Friday folders do not need to come back after they come home Wednesday.

Thursday: We will clean up our room and desks/tables with a fun math activity in the morning. Yes, I am combining math and cleaning. Fun should be had by all. We will be having a picnic lunch on the school grounds with Mrs. Tate and Mrs. Freeman's class. Please have your child bring lunch from home on this day. In the afternoon we will do some fun games in the class rooms.

Friday: Mrs. McCleskey's end of the year raffle. It is that time of year, and I am cleaning out. This may be one of the best years ever as I raffle off things from the year and things that I no longer need. :) Everyone will come home with prizes and certificates from their first grade year! This is also a free dress day and 11:00 dismissal.

 Happy Summer!

First Grade News

Thank you to everyone who came to our play Vacation on Mars.  The first graders did a great job, and I was so proud of them.  Hopefully you heard about our celebration/cast party on Thursday where the students enjoyed movies and snacks for a little while in the afternoon.  They had really earned it with all the hard work and effort they put into doing their best on Wednesday night!  Thank you for sending in sunglasses and putting together the outfits for the night, too.  They looked great!

Despite many rehearsals, a cast party and a snow day we still got in reading groups, math and writing this week.  We are continuing to work to get to grade level and beyond in reading.  I am so impressed with all the progress that is being made.  My class has also been doing a great job in the mornings of choosing math and/or reading activities and working independently.  It is very exciting to see them mature and take on more responsibility for their learning!  Keep reading at home!

We have had fun working with fractions this week, and they will be bringing home some fraction monsters that they made.  See if they can explain to you what the fractions on their monsters mean.

In writing we are beginning our all about book.  The students are choosing a topic they know a lot about and are going to write a book about it with a table of contents and information given in the forms of, writing, pictures and diagrams.  Ask them what topic they have chosen for their All About book.

In science we will be finishing up our unit on the Solar System.  I have begun hearing about some of the planet projects.  Remember they are due Tuesday, April 23rd!

News for March 7th

We have begun working on our spring play Vacation to Mars, but we are finding that we need more time to practice and will not be ready by March 21st. We have decided to move the 1st grade spring play to Wednesday, April 10th at 6:30 in the cafeteria. I apologize for any inconvenience this might cause, but we really want our students to shine!

I am going to submit a Scholastic order over the weekend if you would like to order anything on line.

Please also remember that this Friday, March 8th is a professional development day and there is no school for students.

Look for a permission slip in Friday folders for your child to participate in a portable inside planetarium that will be set up in our gym on April 5th.  Thanks to a grant there is no cost to the students, but we need the signed permission slip for them to participate.

Next Friday, March 15 is another $1 jean day to raise money for a school garden.  The flyer is in Friday folders.

Finally the paper bag puppet book reports have been great! I hope you enjoyed making them with your children.
