The Week in Review

Our Daily Five is coming along nicely.  The children have been successful in keeping up their stamina time of around 15 minutes.  We will be introducing the last components next week.  Then we will be able to begin our strategy groups.

In Math we have begun studying complements of 10.  These are numbers that can be added to make 10 like 3 and 7.  You can work on this at home using 10 pennies.  Have your child grab a handful and count how many are in his/her hand and how many are on the table.  This is a great introduction to addition facts.  They need to know their facts through 10 and will be timed in second grade.  We are also beginning to count pennies and nickels.

We continue to work on writing about small moments in our lives during writer’s workshop.  Many of us are working on adding details to our writing and focusing on one moment.

We began our new science unit on animals and habitats.  We will be covering this for the next 5 to 6 weeks.  This Wednesday, Mr. Bob and Melinda who are naturalists from Barr Lake will be doing eagle presentations for the first grades and Thursday the 27th the museum will be here with the Colorado Wildlife presentation.
