We have had
another great week and the students really seem to be settling into to the
routine of first grade!
In reading we have been talking about the
three ways to read a book. See if your
first grader can tell you them. We have
also been working on building our stamina for reading to self. Starting right away and reading the whole
time are two big parts of this. Have
your first grader practice reading to him or herself quietly at home and see
how long he/she can do it!
In writing we wrote our beginning of the
year assessment piece and also took a test to see how we are doing with our
sounds and spelling. Students will soon
be getting individualized words sorts that are assigned based on how they did
on this test. You will learn more about
these at Back to School Night.
In math we are working on numbers that
come before and after and that are one more and one less as well as comparing
numbers and counting by 2’s and 5’s.
Practice counting by 2’s and 5’s in the car!
In social studies we have learned that
most of the world is water and that the 7 big pieces of land are
continents. We are also learning about
the equator and hemispheres. See if your
child can sing the continent song.
Finally and most importantly Back to School
Night is this Tuesday, August 28th from 6 to 7PM. We have told our first graders they get to
send you to school Tuesday night, and they can stay home. In order for all of us to get the most out of
this night please find a sitter or have one parent stay at home with your
children. This way we will have time to
share all the exciting things about first grade with you and answer everyone’s
