Weekly News September 17th

We have had another fun and learning filled week in first grade.  We have implemented all five aspects of the Daily Five literacy program, and we will begin working with small groups of readers next week.  It was exciting to see how many of the students were already familiar with Raz Kids because they had been doing it at home!

We had a wonderful presentation on eagles by Ms. Malinda and Mr. Bob on Wednesday.  We learned that 70 baby eagles have hatched at Barr Lake!  See what your first grader can tell you about eagles’ nests (the size and shape).  Also ask them what eagles eat.  They got to touch models of an eagle’s skull and talon, and Mr. Bob read a great story about an eaglet.

In math we have been practicing telling time to the hour, and we are beginning to count pennies and nickels.  Please practice telling time to the hour and then half and quarter hours on the clocks we sent home.  The clocks can stay at home.  Also practice switching between counting by 5’s and 1’s.  (For example 5, 10, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30)  This helps with counting money and telling time.

Please pay attention to these important upcoming dates:

Monday, Sept. 24:  Picture day, please dress up

Friday, Sept. 28:  No School, teacher work day

October 15, 16, 17:  Parent Conferences 4:15-8:00 PM, more will be coming home about these in the near future as we are waiting for the final word from the administration on how these will be done.
