The ladies who did the presentation are doing a presentation for the parents on Monday, May 23.

Taking Flight!

We had a special treat today. Tristan Tefft's dad visited us. He is a pilot. He taught us about how airplanes fly and showed us how the rudder, elevators and ailerons steer a plane using his model airplane. The first graders were very excited and full of questions and comments. They would love for him to come back on a less windy day and fly his model plane!

Mr. Teft also brought each child a helicopter which is like a propeller on a plane. It was fun to see the kids work at getting their helicopters to fly. Your child has probably shown it to you. Mr. Tefft also told us about a program called Young Eagles that gives children eight years and older a chance to have a ride in a plane for free. You can learn more about this program at youngeagles.org.

Many thanks to Mr. Tefft!

Week of May 2nd

Happy May and Happy Mother's Day! I hope all of you were able to enjoy the beautiful day.

We had the first of our reading assessments this past week and we'll have the rest on Monday and Tuesday of this week. I am so impressed with how well everyone is reading. Everyone has made great progress this year. Thank you for all your hard work with your children and reading with them through out the year. Please keep it up over the summer.

As the year comes to a close in math we will be reviewing time, money, fractions and our math facts. We will also be taking an end of the year math assessment as well as an end of the year MAP math assessment. Those of you with older children are aware of MAP testing. We are now doing these assessments in first grade. The results tell us how our each of our students compare to other students around the country in reading, writing and math. The students are taking these tests during their tech time since they are done on a computer. When they are complete we will be sending home the results.

Permission slips went home last week for our field trip to Barr Lake on May 23rd. Please try to return them this week with the $3 cash for the cost.

Finally put your running shoes on and join us for the Bromley Bolt next Saturday. For more details check the school web site.

Our Museum Field Trip!

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; The kids are so excited about our museum field trip and so are the teachers! Every day this week I have had a different student tell me how many days until the field trip. We will be returning at 2 rather than 9 as the permission slip said. :) Please make sure you are on time to school on Wednesday and chaperones please come in the room to get some information from me. Thank you to all the chaperones!

The first grade teachers and paras have noticed spring fever has struck and would appreciate any pep talks you may have as far as staying focused and making good choices with behavior as we enter these final weeks of school. I know it is hard as the weather gets warmer and the summer break approaches. I have even heard my own daughter say she can't wait for summer and is ready for school to be over. So encourage them to do their best and enjoy these last weeks of first grade.

Our week found us continuing to focus on comprehension in reading and fractions, symmetry, and addition and subtraction in math. We also found that many of us have grown 1 to 2 inches since November! My math class will also be bringing home their third and final attempt to grow plants and record their growth. Most of the students were finally successful and had green thumbs. We continue to learn about Mexico in social studies. See if your first grader can remember how many volcanoes are in Mexico or what the capital city is. We practiced writing letters when we wrote thank you notes to Mr. Bob and Ms. Melinda for the eagle presentation. We changed our morning routine a little and are doing silent reading first thing in the morning on Tuesdays and buddy reading on Thursdays with first graders from Mr. Frazier and Mrs. Freeman's classes. It went really well! Finally I shared my new favorite book with the class about a dog named Nubs. Ask your first grader about it and have a great weekend!

Our Bald Eagle Presentation

Many thanks to Mr. Bob and Ms. Melinda from Barr Lake for the eagle presentation. I would like to extend a big thank you to all of you who have helped me or the school out this year. I really appreciate your efforts. We could not do all that we do at Bromley without volunteers! In math this week we continued to work on fractions and adding and subtracting whole numbers on the number line as well as counting money. Some of us are still reading stories in our Games unit while other have moved on to the Being Afraid unit. There are many fun stories in both of these units and our emphasis continues to be on strategies to help us with comprehension. The students continue to study rocks in science and will soon begin the human body unit. In social studies we finished our American Symbols unit and are now beginning our Mexico unit. Please feel free to send in books or any other items you might have which would be interesting to share during our Mexico unit. This Tuesday we have a special presentation as a finale for our symbols unit. Mr. Bob, one of our super volunteers, will be doing a presentation on eagles with another naturalist from Barr Lake. There is no fee. The students enjoyed a bat presentation that they did earlier this year. Finally please turn in your child's permission slip and money for our field trip to the museum by Tuesday, April 19th at the latest. We have to turn in the money to the office by Wednesday to insure we have our bus and a check for the museum. Thank you.

Week of April 4

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed a nice break. This week has been busy, and the weeks ahead look even busier as we approach the end of the year. Field Trips: The permission slip for a field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science will be going home in this week's Friday folder. We will be seeing an IMAX about rain forest animals and visiting Exhibition Health at the museum. The Human Body is our last unit in science and the rain forest was one of our first units. The students will also have the opportunity to learn more about space and rocks and minerals at the museum. We are also planning a field trip to Barr Lake on May 23rd! We went there last year and had so much fun. We will tour the nature center and do a guided nature walk. Then we will have lunch and do a bug sweep of a field! Cha-Ching!: I am excited to report that the first graders brought in $72. 41 in spare change that we donated to the Red Cross for the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. I am even more excited to report that when my math class counted the money they came up with a total of $71.48. The bank teller was very impressed when I shared their total with him, and he saw how close it was to the actual total! Crystals: The first graders are making crystals in Mrs. Freeman's science class. They did a great job of sharing with me the directions for how to make them. Is your house full of rocks like my class room? I love to see their enthusiasm for this unit in science. Stars and Stripes and More: We are continuing our study of American symbols in social studies. We have learned about Betsy Ross and the American flag as well as the Pledge of Allegiance this week. We also learned about the bald eagle and were able to watch a bald eagle in Iowa sitting on its nest. We even saw the babies. There is a live web cam on the nest. For writing one day I projected the site on the screen and the students wrote as many details about the eagle and its nest as they could. We are working on focusing our writing. Hopefully this catches you up on some of what we are doing. Have a good weekend!

Week of March 21

It's hard to believe it will be April when we return from our break and there are just two months left of first grade. The last two months are a time to work hard but also cherish the little bit of time we have left as a class. We have some field trips in the works which I think the students will really enjoy.

Thank you to all of you who sent in spare change for us to donate to the Red Cross. We will be counting it tomorrow! We continue to work on money. Some of us learned how to make change this week.

We are beginning a new unit in reading titled "Games". All the stories are about games or contests. We enjoyed listening to Mrs. Rollman's first graders read one of the stories on Thursday.

In social studies we learned about more American symbols like the White House and Liberty Bell. Bromley our traveling monkey is headed to Philadelphia over the break. We look forward to him returning with possibly his picture next to the Liberty Bell! Bromley visited Oregon with Hayden earlier this month and saw where Lewis and Clark ended their journey and a cheese factory!

The big excitement this week was in science. The first graders made volcanoes erupt! Too bad we can't have a field trip to Hawaii to see a real one. We did watch a video of a volcano erupting in Hawaii.

Happy Spring Break! I hope you are able to enjoy some special time with you first grader next week.

Leprechaun on the Loose!

We came in the room today and found chairs turned over and leprechaun footprints everywhere! There was even a bowl of chocolates that the little fellow had left behind, and he drew a picture of himself on Mrs. Rutter's board. There was lots of green and glitter to be seen, too!

The class did a great job of cleaning up the leprechaun's mess at the end of the day, and I think a fun time was had by all. The rest of the week seems much less exciting to report on!

We continue to count money and work on place value in math and read some of Aesop's fables in reading. In writing we are continuing to work on our essays about our happiest memory at Bromley, and we have begun looking at poetry. We are learning all about Washington D.C. Ask your first grader the name of our country's capital and what are some of the things you can see there. Everyone seems to be very excited about our unit on rocks. We are learning about metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks.

Don't forget to send in any spare change you find around the house for us to count and donate to the Red Cross for the earthquake and tsunami victims.

Did any of the leprechaun's glitter make it to your house???? Have a great weekend!

Week of March 7

Wow! We seemed to pack a lot of learning and activities into our four day week. Everyone seemed to enjoy their free time this morning. Not having to do handwriting or journals is a welcome break for everyone! Seeing the children wearing slippers and carrying stuffed animals made it seem almost like a slumber party. I need to be better about taking pictures. We also welcomed a new student, Joshua, to our class today!

The big news for the week is that we will be changing our specials time. We will no longer be going at the end of the day. Our new specials time will be 12:58-1:48. We found the last period of the day not to be the most ideal time for first grade specials for various reasons and the first grade and specials teachers are looking forward to the change. We will now be in our room at the end of the day and will come out the east entrance again rather than the main entrance. This will start Monday, the first day of the fourth quarter.

This week in reading we read another Frog and Toad story and a story about an ant who tried to climb to the sky. Our stories now have comprehension tests with each of them. This is a big step in first grade. You will see these tests coming home in the Friday folders. Please look over them with your child and discuss any questions they have missed. We are teaching the children how to read the tests carefully and how to look back at the story to find the answers. We are also teaching them how to answer with complete sentences. These comprehension tests are an important part of the reading curriculum at our school through fourth grade, so learning how to take them well now will be helpful for the future.

In math we enjoyed creating a shape museum using the objects the students brought from home. It was fun determining which three dimensional shapes the objects were. In writing we started working on an essay that each child will enter in a contest sponsored by the League of Charter Schools. The theme is "My happiest memory at Bromley East". If you would be interested in helping type up the students' final versions please let me know.

I hope you are able to enjoy the long weekend with your first grader! The teachers will be working on third quarter report cards and doing some planning for next year on Friday. I still can't believe we are so close to the end of this year!

Week of February 28

March has started out beautifully! The students and teachers have all enjoyed the warmer recesses. Congratulate your first grader. They won the cafeteria contest for good behavior for the month of February. I am very proud of them! We did not win the book report contest. Mrs. Freeman's class went above and beyond with book reports and are to be congratulated. I am still very proud of how many of my students did one or many more book reports. They really seemed to enjoy reading books and writing the reports. I will surprise the class with a treat Friday morning for their hard work!

We have been reading Frog and Toad stories in reading and working on our comprehension skills like summarizing. Have your first grader stop and summarize what he or she is reading to you. In math we have begun our unit on polygons. Ask your first grader if a circle is a polygon. We learned about Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin in social studies. In writing we are working on planning our writing in our heads and with sketches before writing the words. You can help your first grader with this by having them orally tell stories to you about things that happen to them. Have them sequence the stories using words like first, then, next and last.

Finally we had a neat experience today. We listened to the 6th graders rehearse their band concert. It was great to see so many of the first graders excited about the music and the sixth graders delighted in playing for them. Mr. DeMeyer and the sixth graders also did a wonderful job of showing us each of the instruments and telling us about the three types woodwind, brass and percussion. Don't be surprised if you first grader wants to be in band in middle school!

Have a great weekend and thank you for all you do to support your child's education!

February 28

I hope you all had a good weekend and are ready for a full week of school this week. I apologize for my blog not being updated. We lost out Internet Thursday night. Comcast should be at my house some time today trying to figure out the problem. :)

I am also sorry Friday folders did not go home on Friday. I was not here on Friday and was not made aware of this until this morning when I got to school. They will be coming home today!

We had a good week last week as we finished unit 6 in math and reading and took assessments. Our next unit in reading is titled "Keep Trying" and in math we will be looking at Geometry. In writing we have been working on animal reports and continuing to write about small moments. In social studies we continue to study the American Revolution and made Minutemen and Redcoats last week. We learned about what it is like to be an Astronaut in space in science. Ask your first grader what it is like to eat food in space.

Library books are due this Wednesday and next Friday is an in service day for teachers. There will be no students that day as we prepare third quarter report cards. Wow! It is hard to believe we are entering the last quarter of the year!

I enjoyed meeting with all of you over the conference week. Thank you so much to the parents who provided the delicious food for the teachers!

Happy March!

Library Books and Parent Surveys

Just a few quick reminders. Library books are due tomorrow February 16th. Also the parent surveys which have been passed out at spring conferences in previous years are now on line. The children were so excited to finally go out for recess today, and the teachers were happy for them, too.

We introduced the /aw/ sound in reading and reviewed the sounds we have been doing over the past few weeks. We read a story titled "Me On the Map" which tied into our social studies lesson. We looked at maps of Colorado, the US and world and discussed how we live in the country of the United States and that in social studies we are learning how our country came to be. We learned that the Americans wrote a letter to the king telling him they were not happy and that one of the men who wrote the letter was George Washington. We have also learned about Redcoats and Minutemen and made tri-cornered colonial hats or Minutemen hats. You may have seen your first grader wearing one. In writing we are learning how to stretch out our stories about the small moments in our lives. Mrs. Rutter is beginning to work with us on writing animal reports. In science Mrs. Freeman wrapped herself up in a scarf and told us all about Neptune and how cold it is on that planet. In math we continue to do activities to help us with our facts and did some measuring with centimeters and meters.

Our Valentines party is Monday as well as our rescheduled picture day. I also look forward to meeting with you next week at conferences. Please don't forget that there is no school next Friday or on Monday the 21st because of the President's Day holiday.

Enjoy your weekend and the warm weather!

Week of January 31

Wow! This was quite a week. I hope all of you stayed warm and were able to enjoy a few fun family moments during our days off. We did some baking and worked on Valentines at my house. Valentines are great handwriting and reading practice as the children have to be able to read what they wrote in order to put it in the correct bag.

When we were at school this week we continued to work on math facts. We reviewed sounds in reading and started a story about maps. I told the children to make maps of their rooms if they had some free time like the girl did in the story. Unfortunately this was after the two extra days they had at home. We learned about the Boston Tea Party in Social Studies. Ask your first grader why Boston Harbor was like a huge tea pot.

Library books are due this week. We will be going tomorrow, Friday. I will post on my blog the rescheduled picture day once I know it. Please return the slips and money for pizza on the 14th if you child would like pizza for lunch that day. Also please return the parent conference sign up sheets. Keep in mind that the 18th and 21st are no school days.

Stay warm and take some time to catch some snowflakes on you tongue as I see more is on the way!

Week of the 100th Day of School!

We enjoyed celebrating the 100th day of school and are already at the 104th day! Our 100th day started with us making 100 day headbands. In reading we read books about the 100th day and some of us tried writing list of 10o words that we could read. In math snakes were made that were 100 inches long, and we licked lolly pops 100 times. You can not get to the center of a Tootsie Pop in in 100 licks! We also practiced making tally marks as we rolled a die 100 times to see which number it landed on the most and flipped a coin 100 times to see which side it landed on the most. In the afternoon we looked at every one's collections of 100 things and then had a great time parading around the school performing our cheer. The kindergartners can't wait to learn the cheer next year! For our writing assignment we wrote about what our life would be like in 100 years when we are 106 and 107. Some of us wrote that our house would be very old and our clothes ripped. One student will have a car that flies! And that was our 100th day of school!

Now for the rest of the week. We continue our Journeys unit in reading and are reading a story written by Bill Pickney who sailed around the world alone. It has been a great review of the continents we studied earlier this year. We have learned about the /oo/ sound as in foot and /ow/ sound as in cow, too. Hopefully you were able to see the GOO that came home last Friday in honor of the that sound. We had a lot of fun with it all day! In math we continue to work on our addition facts. Some of us are learning about collection boxes which involve finding equivalent names for numbers. See if your first grader knows another name for 5 such as 4+1. We are also learning about fact families. In science we are learning about each of the planets. Mrs Freeman does a great job of demonstrating there tilts, revolutions and rotations. We are writing facts about each planet in a book. In social studies we are learning about the first 13 colonies. See if your first grader can tell you the name of at least one colony. In writing we continue to focus on writing about "small moments" in our lives. These can be as simple as walking the dog or going out to eat. Point out small moments in your lives this weekend. Then your child can write about it at school.

I am still waiting to hear about conference days and times and will send the sign up sheet home as soon as I know. We do have class pictures and individual portraits on Tuesday of this week. Students need to be in uniform for these pictures. Library books are also due on Tuesday. Please remember to send back the note and money for the pizza lunch on Valentine's Day if your child wishes to participate.

Have a great weekend!

The 100th Day of School

We had a wonderful time celebrating our 100th Day of school and performing our cheer for the office and kindergarten through fourth grades! We continue to work on addition facts in math and many of us have taken the unit 5 tests in reading and math. Unit 6 in reading is titled Journeys, and we will be reading stories and poems about trips. Some of us are making goo on Friday as the oo sound is the first one we learn about in unit 6. In Writer's Workshop we finished a unit and celebrated by sharing stories and having a snack. I am impressed with how well everyone is thinking of their own ideas and writing in their journals. Being able to tell stories orally is an important component of being able to write stories. Have your first grader tell you stories about things that are happening in their lives at the dinner table or in the car.

In social studies we have finished our unit on early American settlements and will begin a unit on the first 13 colonies. To finish up the unit we will be making horn books like the Puritans used. We also read some books about Dr. Martin Luther King and watched a movie about Rosa Parks. We continue to study the planets in science.

A note about our Valentine party and a class list will be coming home in Friday folders this week. I will be sending home a sign up sheet for parent conferences (the week of February 14) as soon the office tells us the exact dates and times that they would like us to do them.

Finally don't forget our 100th Day of School on Monday. Please make sure you send your child with 100 of something so they are able to share when we look at all the collections of 100 that people have brought in. We will be walking around and doing our cheer at 1:00.

Week of January 9th

I hope you all enjoy the upcoming three day weekend. Please remember there is no school on Monday due to the Martin Luther King Holiday. The weeks seem to pass so quickly and before you know it we will be in the month of February. We will be having a Valentine/pizza party on the 14th at 10:30 and letters will be coming home about it. The week of February 14th is also parent teacher conferences. A letter and sign up sheet will be coming home for that in the next couple of weeks.

Please remember our 100th Day of School is January 24th and your child needs to bring in 100 of something on that day. We will be doing our cheer around the school at 1:00 on that day. Library books are due on the 2oth and Mrs. Rutter's reading group has book reports due on the 25th. The other reading groups will do a book report in February.

Everyone is making great progress with their reading. I would like to encourage you to keep reading with your child at home. As a parent of a first grader, I know it is not always easy to find the time with after school activities, dinner and baths, but just 10 minutes a night on school nights can be so helpful. We have also been working on math facts and quizzing your first grader with flash cards or just orally in the car is great practice.

We continue to study about the solar system in science, and we learned about The Lost Colony and Jamestown as well as the Puritans in Social Studies this week. In writing we are working on fixing up or editing our writing.

Thank you for all you do!

Week of January 4

We have completed our first week of the new year, and I have enjoyed hearing about new video games and pets, dog sled rides, sledding, movies that were seen and trips on airplanes. I do believe as good time was had by all! The vacation also gave us lots of things to write about in our journals!

Report cards should be coming home in Friday folders along with a sheet which will have your child's mid year reading test scores and a note from me.

The second half of the year will see us focusing more and more on comprehension in reading and counting money and solving addition and subtraction problems in math. In writing we will be doing more editing and write some narratives. In Social Studies we will be learning about the United States of America and Mexico. The human body and electricity are topics we will cover in science.

The hundredth day of school will be Monday, January 24th! Look for a note in Friday folders about a project you will need to do with your child for that day. It is an easy and fun one - be creative! We are learning a cheer for the day and will announce a time in the coming weeks for when we will be going around the school performing the cheer.

Have a good weekend! I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, January 4th. I can't wait to hear and read about every one's vacation. It is also amazing to see how much my students can grow over two weeks and to realize just how far they have come with their academics since the beginning of the year! I am excited about the new year and the second half of first grade. Thank you for all of your continued support and a special thanks to the parents who helped in any way with the sing along and cookie decorating. It was a wonderful way to end the first half of our year and get us into the holiday spirit!

I will post the specials schedule in upcoming events and homework on its page. I will not allow children to go by themselves during the day.

Colorado Children - Imagination Makers Play

Week of December 6

It is hard to believe we are almost to our last week before Christmas and halfway through our school year! As I was watching the students enjoy the Imagination Makers play today I thought about how far they have come since the beginning of the year and what a great group they are, and how much I enjoy being their teacher. Take time to congratulate them on being halfway through first grade and all their hard work so far.

We are enjoying our weather unit in reading. We have read about blizzards, hurricanes and tornadoes. We continue to work on our long vowel sounds. In math we are working on place value and learning games to help us with our math facts and understanding of numbers and their values. We have had a lot of fun with Mrs. Freeman learning about space. She is creating the solar system in her room! In social studies we learned about the Aztecs and Incas and had fun creating Inca black cats, a design they wove into fabrics and painted on walls. We continue to work on sounding out words, writing more and using periods and capital letters correctly.

Next week promises to be very busy with Snowflake shop and our sing along. I will put the dates and times for our snowflake shop visits on my blog as soon as I have them. Above this post are some pictures from our play today. It was nice to see so many of you there!

Specials Week of December 6

Mon. - Music

Tues. - PE

Wed. - Tech

Thurs. - Art

Fri. - Music

Week of November 29

I hope you all had a wonderful time with your family over the Thanksgiving break. Over Thanksgiving my family and I talked about the little things in life that we are thankful for. There are many little things I am thankful for through out the day at school like children successfully sounding out words both in reading and writing, the students who cheer when I say it is time for writing workshop, eager participation from students, hugs and even the joy in finding a lost coat!

We have had a busy week. There seems to be so much we need to accomplish before we reach the middle of the school year. We are beginning unit 5 in reading and math. In reading our new unit is titled "Weather" and in math we are learning addition facts. If you have addition flashcards, quiz your children or call out math facts in the car. In social studies we are studying the Maya, Aztecs and Incas. We have learned they built pyramids just like the Egyptians. In science we have begun our unit on space. That is always a fun one! We continue to work on capitals and periods in writing and on sounding out our words as we write and writing longer pieces.

We put together our December calendar. Of course everyone was excited to see the Christmas tag on the calendar as well as the tag that said "Snowflake Shop". A note will be coming home in Friday folders about it. You will also see an invitation coming home next week for our Holiday Sing Along on Friday, December 17 at 2:30. The three first grade classes will be singing holiday songs in the cafeteria and decorating cookies after! The Bromley Ball will be after school on the 10th. A note will be coming home in Friday folders about it.

Thank you to everyone who donated stuffed animals. The pile in the office was amazing!

Have a good week!

Library Books

Books are due this Thursday, December 2.

Specials Weeks of November 22 and 29

Mon. - PE

Tues. - Tech

Mon. - Art

Tues. - Music

Wed. - PE

Thurs. - Tech

Fri. - Art

Week of November 15

Thank you to all of you who sent in food for the food drive!

We had another productive week. We will finish Unit four in reading next week. We continue to work on long vowels. In writing we talked about doing the best we can and adding details. We continued to study the oceans in science, and in social studies we have been learning about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Ask your first grader how the Indians helped the Pilgrims and what games the children played at the first Thanksgiving. In math we have been working on temperature and time.

We just have two days next week before our Thanksgiving break. There will be no spelling next week, but packets for the following week, November 29, will come home in Friday folders or homework folders. There will be no Friday folders next week because we are only in school for two days! :)

We will have just three weeks before our winter break when we come back on the 29th. Our Imagination Makers play will be December 8th.

And mark your calendars! On Friday, December 17th the first graders will be singing some holiday songs in the cafeteria and decorating cookies. We would love for you to join us! It will be from 2:30 until 3:30.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! The first grade teachers have noticed that the students are doing really well with the math and reading groups. Everyone is making it to the correct class and bringing the supplies they need. It is nice to see them being so responsible!

In math we are working on measurement, counting, and math facts. The measurement unit has been fun as we use everything from our feet to tape measures to measure things in the room and our bodies. In reading we have been reading a story about firefighters and started our long vowel sounds. In writing we are working on capital letters and periods and continue to do journaling in the morning and started a writer's workshop in the afternoon. We learned there are three things we can do when we think we are done writing: add details to our picture, add words, or start a new piece. We talked about writing stories about us and things that happen to us. In science we studied ocean habitats. Mrs. Freeman found some interesting and entertaining videos to show us. One was a true story about a lost whale. In social studies we finished our unit on Egypt, and we will learn about the Pilgrims in preparation for Thanksgiving.

Please remember to send in canned goods if you would like to participate in our Thanksgiving food drive. Also library books are due Wednesday, November 17, and Imagination Makers permission slips are due Friday, November 19.

Enjoy your weekend!

Specials Week of Nov. 8

Mon. - Art

Tues. - Music

Wed. - PE

Thurs. - Tech

Fri. - Art

Week of November 1

We have completed our first week of November and have just two and a half weeks until our Thanksgiving break! Spirit week is next week. Please check the Upcoming Events on my blog to see what the different free dress days will be. We will also be doing a canned food drive next week and the winning class will earn a free dress day the week of Thanksgiving! This is a great service project that the first graders can participate in so please send in some canned food if you are able. Speaking of service projects, did you know that the first graders pick up trash around the school on Fridays? We have missed the past couple of Fridays and the kids have been commenting on all the trash they see on the school grounds. We will take advantage of the beautiful weather and pick up trash this Friday!

We began unit 4 in math and reading this week. In math we have worked on measuring temperature and distance. We had fun using nonstandard units such as our feet, arms and hands to measure things in the room. I see some graphing of canned goods in our future and the more cans and boxes the better! Unit 4 in reading is titled "Our Neighborhood at Work". We are reading about different jobs people do. We also continue to work on sounds such as /ng/ and /qu/.

In science we are exploring ocean habitats and in writing we continue to work on organization. I am really happy with the progress the students are making with their journaling, too. In social studies we wrote our names with hieroglyphs and finished making our mummies. If you have some time next week and would like to come in and put up a bulletin board with some mummies and hieroglyph sheets, please e mail me. I will also have some Thanksgiving writing that I would like to put up the following week (Nov. 15) so please e mail me if you have time that week. Both projects would take 30 minutes to and hour at most.

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend! There may be some raking and jumping in leaf piles at my house.

Specials Week of November 1

Mon. - Tech

Tues. - Art

Wed. - Music

Thurs. - PE

Fri. - Tech

Week of October 25

Thank you all for making time to meet with me this week. Thank you also to all of you who contributed to the teacher dinners and our Halloween party. Many of the children came up to me during the party and said they were having fun.

We completed our first week with our new reading and math groups. Overall it was successful, and the students seemed to enjoy going to different teachers. Look for math homework and decodable books to still be coming home in the coming weeks. Your decodable book bags may have a new day that they are coming home and due back at school. Please check your child's reading and math teachers' blogs for homework.

Spelling lists came home in Friday folders, and our first spelling test will be next Friday, November 5. We took the unit 3 test in reading and will take the unit three test in math this coming week. We worked on line plots and math facts this week. In social studies we continue to study Egypt and are making mummies. In writing we continue to work on organization and some of the class wrote a spooky story.

Finally we enjoyed a presentation on bats given by Mr. Bob and Ms. Melinda from Barr Lake. Did you know one bat can eat up to 4,000 insects in a night? We hope to have them back through out the year with other interesting presentations.

Enjoy the long weekend and trick or treating! We have a solid week of work next week followed by spirit week. I will post the free dress days for spirit week next week.

Week of October 25 Specials

Mon. - Tech

Tues. - Art

Wed. - Music

Thurs. - PE

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY

Week of October 18

Thank you to all of you who donated candy and volunteered at the Harvest Hop. The first and second grade hall looked awesome, and I heard many people say our hallway was the best! I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the students going by in costume and handing out candy. It is nice to take a break and have some fun!

We accomplished a lot this week even with the candy and excitement of Halloween. :) A couple very thoughtful first graders brought their Halloween candy to share with the whole class! First graders have big hearts as you all know. We have started working on blends in reading. You will notice that the decodable books that have been coming home have had /sh/, /th/, /ch/, and /ar/ words in them. Ask your first grader to sing the witch song that we learned with the /ch/ sound.

In math we worked on more skip counting and introduced the dime into our money counting. Now have your first grader start and stop counting by 10s, 5s and then 1s in the car. We have also been working on counting backwards by 5s as I notice fewer voices chiming in when we are counting that way.

In social studies we continue to work on our Egypt unit. I taught one of my favorite lessons where I tell the students how mummies were made. If you have not heard already, they took the brain out through the nose with a hook! We will be making our own mummies next week. No hooks are needed. :)

In science the students have been studying pond habitats, and we are looking forward to a presentation about bats next week by Mr. Bob who volunteers in Mrs. Freeman's first grade. Mrs. Rutter continues to work on organization with writing, and we are really working on capital letters at the beginning of sentences and end marks in our journals.

We checked out books in tech this week. If you have not returned the book your child checked out two weeks ago, please do. The books that were checked out this week are due November 1.

Finally I look forward to seeing all of you next week at conferences!

Library Books

Library books are due Tuesday, October 19!

Specials Week of October 18

Mon. - PE

Tues. - Tech

Wed. - Art

Thurs. - Music

Fri. - PE

Math and Reading Groups

Due to hearing and vision screening this week the first grade team has decided to postpone starting math and reading groups until the week of October 25. The Colorado Wildlife presentation and fire department visit were a lot of fun. The students had very thoughtful questions for the firefighters like what should you do if there is a baby in the house. The firefighters did a skit to teach some fire safety tips. One of them dressed up like an old lady. You may have heard about him.

We continued our On the Move unit in reading and went over the /th/ and /sh/ sounds. In math we worked on adding and subtracting on a number line. We also learned a new game where you exchange pennies for nickels. We will begin our reading and math groups next week. We will spend a good bit of the week getting used to the new routine and helping the students adjust to it.

We also have hearing and vision screening first thing Tuesday morning. Thank you to all of you who signed up for conferences. If you have not signed up, I will be sending home another sign up sheet in your child's homework folder on Monday. I look forward to meeting with all of you.

Book It Volunteer

I am looking for a parent who would be interested in organizing and implementing the Book It reading program in my class room. We explored a groundhog hole in the

grasslands. We let a tarantula crawl on us and tried shedding snake skin in the desert. In the forest we tried out deer ears and examined a deer's skull. In the wetlands we looked at frogs and fish and pet a mink. Some very important notes came home this week. One note informed you that the first grade will begin reading and math groups second quarter, which starts Monday, October 18th. Research has shown that this can be beneficial and successful for students even at the first grade level. As a first grade team we want to do everything we can to help our students succeed. If you have questions or concerns about the groups we can discuss them during our conference. We understand that this could be a little overwhelming to the first graders at first, and we will do all we can to assist them with the adjustment. They may have to go to another first grade teacher's classroom for instruction. It is helpful that they know all three teachers already because of our switching for social studies, science, and writing. The first grade team has done reading groups in the past. We ask for your patience as we figure out the logistics of it all. We have discussed that we will post on our own blogs information relevant for our math and reading classes. So as an example if your child has me for math and Mrs. Rutter for reading, check my blog for math homework and Mrs. Rutter's for reading homework. I will continue to post information about writing, social studies and science and upcoming events on my blog.

The other important item in Friday folders is the sign up for parent conferences. Please read the letter and return the sign up sheet as soon as you can.

Now a little about last week. We enjoyed reading a story about children traveling to there grandmother's house in New York City. The story took place in the past. See if your child remembers what a bicycle built for two, trolley and ferry are. The students created a wonderful underground habitat in our room . In math we spent Thursday and Friday doing some Explorations. We played a game that required counting pennies and nickels, and I was happy to see how well they are doing that. They played another game called Before and After which works on knowing numbers that come before and after a number. They also did some activities with pattern blocks and one where they looked for odd and even numbers on dominoes. We had some fun with odd and even numbers. Ask your child whether 1,205 is odd or even. In writing they did activities on organization. They also found a prompt on the board every morning for their journals. We are really working on focusing and writing 5 sentences about one topic using the prompt. In social studies we took our Mesopotamia test and began our unit on ancient Egypt and talked about the importance of the Nile river. See if your first grader remembers why the Nile river was so important to ancient Egypt.

We have a busy week ahead. Please turn in book orders by Monday. The Museum of Nature and Science will be visiting Monday with their Colorado Wildlife Experience. On Tuesday the Brighton Fire Department will visit us. Bring in $1 by Wednesday and your child can wear a pink shirt on Thursday. This is a fund raiser for Breast Cancer research (see Mrs. Harrell's letter on website). Finally no school on Friday but Harvest Hop begins at 4:30 with Monster Mash Dash. Whew! And if you are like me you have soccer practices and games and birthday parties on top of it all. :)

Specials Week of October 11

Mon. - PE

Tues. - Tech

Wed. - Art

Thurs. - Music

Progress Reports

Progress Reports were delivered to teachers at 3:15 on Friday. I was impressed with how well everyone is doing with counting money and counting by 5's and 1's in our math exercises this week. Some of the students can count past 100 by 5's. Thank you for working with your first grader! We will be taking our unit 2 math test on Friday. Look for it in next week's Friday folder. The spread sheet with their quiz scores for unit 2 will be coming home in this week's Friday folder.

We took our unit 2 reading test on Thursday. It will also be coming home next week. Our last story in our Animals unit was about hermit crabs. Ask your first grader why hermit crabs are different from other crabs? Our next unit is titled On the Go. We will be reading stories about traveling and transportation.

In science we began our unit on grassland habitats. Mrs. Freeman was very impressed with some of the habitat logs the students wrote for her. Mrs. Rutter worked with the students on creating bold beginnings with their writing. In social studies we are learning about the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia. We learned a civilization has cities. We also learned we would rather learn our alphabet than the Mesopotamian cuneiform alphabet that had 2,000 characters.

Look for book orders in this week's Friday folder. They are due Monday, October 11. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science will visit us on the 11th with their habitat presentation and on October 12th the Brighton fire department will be visiting us.

Happy October and thank you again for all you do!

Friday, October 1

We are encouraging students to be at school on Friday, October 1 for the October count which helps determine our school's funding. First a couple of important dates. Pictures are this Monday, September 27 and students may be out of uniform that day for pictures. Second it is progress report time, and they will be going home October 1 in Friday folders. If you have been checking your child's grades in Infinite Campus, you should have a good idea of how they are doing.

We continue our unit on Animals in reading. This week we read a poem about mice and a nonfiction piece on spiders. See if your child remembers any facts about spiders. We also took our second sound quiz in Unit 2 and everyone did well! We have started counting money in math. This is a great activity to work on at home. Many of them could use a little extra help. Right now we are just counting nickles and pennies. You can even practice in the car by doing start and stop counting. Have your child start counting by 5's (5, 10, 15) then say stop and have him/her switch to ones (16, 17, 18). If your child can not count to at least to 50 by 5's have them practice counting by 5's with you.

In science we are finishing our rain forest unit. If you can, stop by Mrs. Freeman's room to see the rain forest she created using the animals the children made. We finished our study of the Ice Age in social studies and will begin to look at the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia. Hopefully all of the students will have an understanding of what a civilization is when we are done. In writing we are working on adding details to our writing. This coming week I'd like to have them choose one of the pieces they have been writing for me and work on publishing (creating a final copy) of it for me.

Book orders arrived. Your child should have brought home the ones you ordered on Wednesday. Please let me know if there are any problems. We enjoyed looking at and reading the new books that I was able to get for the classroom!

Finally I am blogging from home today and you probably heard the children had a substitute on Tuesday. My husband is on his annual two week work trip to Yellowstone, and of course this is when my three year old gets his first cold of the school year. My husband is back tomorrow with no other trips planned so life will be back to normal on Monday.

I continue to enjoy teaching your children! Thanks to all of you for your support.

Paperless!

Parents please remember if you want to receive paper copies of notes, flyers, etc from the school you need to fill out a form in the front office. In reading we had our first sound quiz in unit two and overall everyone did very well. It will be coming home in Friday folders. We read about baby animals and what animals eat. Ask your first grader what gorillas eat. During our focus time in the afternoons we broke into groups and read books as well as continuing to work on our writing. We talked about writing things that are close to our hearts and that we know a lot about. Help your child brainstorm some ideas for writing.

In math this week we did some work with time and measurement and did some explorations with clocks and rulers. We will begin looking at +1 facts too. Many of the students seem to still struggle with the concept of numbers that come before and after a number so continue to quiz them on this at home. Most of the students seem to be understanding tally marks now.

In social studies we are beginning our unit on the Ice Age. Ask you first grader what a nomad is. In science we continue to study habitats and in writing we are looking at the Idea trait. We wrote about something that is important to us this week.

We are already nearing the end of September and since next Friday is a professional development day free dress day will be on Thursday, September 23rd.

Finally please remember to send back the permission slip and $5 for The Wildlife Experience. This is a program that will be visiting us form the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The children will learn about habitats in Colorado. Also book orders were placed and should be here soon!

Specials Week of Sept. 13

Mon. - Tech
Tues. - Art
Wed. - Music
Thurs. - PE
Fri. - Tech

Week of September 7

I hope you all had a nice Labor Day. Your first graders have been working hard and definitely earned the day off! Look for Unit 1 Math and Reading tests in Friday folders this week along with a note from me and sheet with their math grades up to this point in the year.

This week in math we worked on counting by 2's, counting forward and backward on a number grid and finding pairs of numbers whose sums are 10. Have your first grader count by 2's for you. Ask them what the first grade cheer is?

We continue to work on letter sounds in phonics and began unit 2 in reading which is titled Animals. Ask your first graders if polar bears dance and what raccoon babies are called.

We have been doing some journaling on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We learned that when you think your are done you have just begun! They have to ask three questions when they think they are done with a journal entry. Can I add more details to the picture? Can I add more words? Do I need to start a new piece?

Mrs. Freeman continues to teach us about habitats. In social studies we are finishing our geography unit. See if your first grader knows the city, state, country and continent on which they live.

Thank you for all the book orders! I am looking forward to adding new books to the class library with the points you've earned for me!

Specials Week of Sept. 7

Tues. - Tech

Wed. - Art

Thurs. -Music

Fri. - PE

Week of August 30

We have completed our first units in math and reading. In math we have worked mainly on our numbers and numeration standard. This involves counting by 1's, 2's and 5's(forward and backward) and knowing the values of numbers. Our reading unit reviewed the alphabet and we worked on the sounds of s, m, t, h, and short a. Hopefully your first grader handed you the bag of decodables with the letter from me and the reading log and you have been reading the decodable books. Unit Tests will be coming home in Friday folders next week.

In science we studied the rain forest. Your first grader can hopefully tell you an animal that lives in the canopy. Also ask them to name a country in North America. In writing we have been focusing on how to write telling sentences and to use capital letters at the beginning and periods at the end. Have them write some sentences for you!

Please remember book orders are due Tuesday, September 7th. This is also a great way to build our classroom library as I receive points toward books for every book you purchase.

Finally September 6th is Labor Day and there is no school. Enjoy the long weekend!

Week of Aug. 30 Specials

Mon. - PE

Tues. - Tech

Wed. - Art

Thurs. - Music

Fri. - PE

Week of August 23

It is hard to believe we have already completed 12 days of school. We finished reviewing the alphabet in reading and have read more poetry. On Friday we will take a quiz in reading on our letters and sounds. We have also been doing dictations of letters and some sight words.

We have been working on counting up and back on the number line in math as well as comparing numbers and tally marks. Please make sure your child is bringing back his or her math homework every day.

We learned about the equator and Northern and Southern Hemispheres in social studies and have continued our study of habitats in science. Mrs. Rutter gave us our first writing assessment and everyone is currently writing about what they would like if they had a fairy godmother. This is in conjunction with the Cinderella stories we read.

Friday Folders will be coming home with the handbook from the school and a book order from me. If you wish to order books please return it by Sept. 7th with checks made out to Scholastic.

Thank you for all your continued support.

Adrienne McCleskey

Week of August 23 Specials

Mon. - Music

Tues. - PE

Wed. - Tech

Thurs. - Art

Fri. - Music

Week of August 16

Thank you to all of you who attended the Back to School Night. It was nice to share with you what we do in first grade. If you were unable to attend, a First Grade handbook will be coming home in Friday folders. Yes, we will have Friday folders this week, and hopefully you have seen the homework folders coming home this week. Papers that have stars or grades on them in the homework folder can stay at home but the folder and any ungraded papers need to come back to school. We will start having math homework every night Monday through Thursday next Tuesday. It is important to make your child responsible for his/her folder as establishing good homework habits in first grade will benefit them through out their school years.

We have been busy this week reviewing letter writing and sounds. We took the first half of our BEAR reading assessment. We read and discussed some poetry, too. In math we worked on comparing numbers and adding one more and one less. We also took our first math facts quiz on adding zero. Finally we learned the Bunny Hop Game which helps us count up and back on the number line and Top It which helps us with comparing numbers. In Social Studies we started our geography unit and learned about the seven continents. Finally we had our first writing class with Mrs. Rutter and science class with Mrs. Freeman. Hopefully your first grader has shared already with you some of what he/she did this week.

This week's specials

Mon - Art
Tues - Music
Wed - PE
Thurs - Tech
Fri - Art

Teddy Bear Picnic

Here we are enjoying our Teddy Bear Picnic to celebrate our first week of first grade! Everyone seems to be getting into the routine of school. We learned some math games and read many stories. I had fun using my new document camera and projector to show the first graders the pages on the board in the books we read. I think they liked it too. Hopefully you saw the two Homelinks that came home on Wednesday and Thursday in their yellow homework folders. They were letters explaining our Everyday Math curriculum. Friday folders did not go home this week but will next week.
